Rithy Panh (The Missing Picture) divides the screen of his new film into three frames, thus creating a type of cinematic triptych. Through phenomenal editing and use of a wide variety of materials, the Cambodian director delves into the greatest tragedies of the twentieth century – from the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, through the Nazi extermination camps to the killing fields of Vietnam and Cambodia. Panh’s unique language creates an audio-visual presentation that is at once intense and unsettling while also poetic and rich in imagery. The result is a viewing experience that is hard to describe in words. One can only say that this film is a must-see. The film was awarded Best Documentary at the latest Berlinale.
